Detailed Animal Action
German Shepherds

One policeman, Jim Street (Colin Farrell), has a pet German Shepherd. There is a scene where Jim is running on the beach and his faithful companion is running along side him. The film seems to speed up as the two are running very fast. A trainer put the dog on its mark and stood off camera using a combination of verbal cues and hand signals to get the dog to achieve the action. Later, in post production the film speed was

increased so it appears as if Jim and his furry companion are running much faster than they really are! Later there is a scene which takes place in Jim’s apartment and the dog is seen lying on the floor as Jim’s girlfriend tells him she is leaving him. The dog watches her leave. A trainer put the dog on its mark and stood off camera cuing the dog to look in a certain direction.

At the airport, a drug sniffing dog is checking out some luggage. A trainer hid some treats all around the suitcases. An actor dressed as a customs agent took the leash from the trainer right before the camera began to roll and walked the dog to the suitcases where it immediately began to sniff out the treats.

In one scene as the police are at a crime scene, a policeman holding a dog on a leash walks by. Later, a woman holding a dog stands next to a police officer. The dog barks and growls at the officer. A trainer handed the costumed actors the dogs right before filming and stood just off camera. To get the one dog to bark and growl, the trainer st
anding off camera used hand signals. Both dogs were retrieved by the trainers after the scenes were filmed and were treated to edible rewards.

As some officers chase a suspect in one sequence, they run through some sheets that are hanging on a clothesline and into an alley. The suspect runs by a dog standing in the back of a parked pick-up truck and another dog behind a chain link fence. Both dogs bark and growl as the men run by. A trainer placed the dog on its mark in back of the parked truck and stood off camera using hand signals to get the dog to bark and growl. The dog behind the fence just happened to be there when they were filming this scene so it was caught on camera acting naturally.

Birds
In the beginning of the film as a police helicopter flies over a gun battle in the streets below, some birds are shown flying in formation. The cameraman caught this shot naturally as the birds flew by.
Bats
The bats that flew up when the S.W.A.T. team entered the storm drain were computered generated.
